PRFV columns —Polyester Reinforced with Fibreglass— are structural supports manufactured entirely without any metallic elements in their composition. This complete absence of metal is precisely what sets them radically apart from a conventional steel or aluminium column. By incorporating no metal whatsoever, the column is completely dielectric —Class II electrical insulation—, which eliminates the risk of electrocution from voltage overload and removes the need for an earth connection installation. At Polylight, we have been manufacturing PRFV columns since 2008, with more than 14 active production lines at our plant in Galicia, and we have been market leaders in this type of solution since 1989.
The advantages affect both the installation process and the complete lifecycle of the product. First, weight: fibreglass columns are significantly lighter than steel or concrete ones, which reduces transport costs and considerably simplifies the on-site installation process, shortening timescales and optimising resources. Second, resistance: they are highly resistant to impacts, loads and adverse weather conditions —rain, wind, extreme temperatures, salt mist— and under strong forces they flex without cracking, recovering their original shape once the storm has passed. Third, virtually zero maintenance: as they neither corrode nor rust, they require no periodic surface treatments or premature replacements, making them a highly cost-effective solution over the long term.
Our range covers four main application lines. The first and most in-demand is public lighting: columns for illuminating streets, parks, avenues, cycle lanes and industrial areas. The second is the installation of photovoltaic panels, both in autonomous and hybrid systems. The third is medium and low voltage electrical cabling, where the dielectric properties of the material provide a decisive safety advantage over any metallic solution. The fourth is masts for telecommunications and video surveillance. In all cases, the columns can be combined with luminaires, surveillance cameras, solar energy systems and specific accessories adapted to the precise technical requirements of each installation and project.
Because they are completely non-conductive of electricity. Our columns are Class II dielectric, which means the user is fully protected against electrocution even in the event of voltage overload or electrical system failure. As they incorporate no metallic components —neither in the shaft, nor in the base, nor in the access doors— there is no electrical conduction pathway that could pose a risk to people or nearby installations. This characteristic also removes the obligation to install an earth connection, simplifying the electrical project and reducing installation costs. This is an especially critical factor in public lighting installations, school environments, parks and residential areas where passive safety is an unavoidable requirement.
The price depends on several technical factors that define the characteristics of the final product: the height —we manufacture from 3 up to 20 metres—, the diameter and taper of the shaft, the required deformation class —I, II or III—, the type of base and fastening system chosen —concrete embedment or base plate anchorage—, the aesthetic finishes in RAL reference and the additional accessories the column must incorporate. As this is a highly customisable technical product, each project requires a specific assessment. Very high. Our manufacturing process allows virtually all the technical and aesthetic parameters of the column to be adapted to the specific requirements of each project. In terms of dimensions, we manufacture any height between 3 and 20 metres with the diameter and taper required by the installation. The columns can be secured by means of concrete embedment or anchorage with a base plate manufactured entirely in PRFV. Aesthetically, we offer a wide chromatic diversity with RAL references in both smooth and metallic finishes, adapted to the architectural or urban environment of each project. For projects with special requirements, our R&D department works directly with the client’s team to develop bespoke solutions with full guarantees of safety and product integrity.
